Mercury Retrograde typically causes people chaos and wreaks havoc on emotions, so many people wonder if it’s okay to focus on manifesting and working with the law of attraction during this time. Is it a good idea to focus on manifesting what you want during Mercury Retrograde? Is it safe to manifest during Mercury Retrograde?


Yes, it is.


Mercury Retrograde occurs when the planet Mercury appears to move backward in the sky, which occurs three times per year. When Mercury goes retrograde, the energy of the things associated with the planet appear to slow down: communication; technology; transport; thinking, learning, information; buying/selling; and contracts, agreements, and important documents. This can show up in the following ways: cars, electronics, etc. suddenly breaking down or malfunctioning; losing work not backed up on your computer; documents/emails/letters/calls/text messages not reaching their desired recipient or having phone calls/texts/emails go ignored or unanswered; problems with travel (flight delays; missing luggage); website problems; and misunderstandings in relationships due to communication issues. Mercury going retrograde can also result in people from your past making a reappearance.


Mercury Retrograde can often hit people especially hard. If you’re already going through particularly turbulent or confusing times emotionally, or if you’re already feeling exhausted in your body, mind, or spirit, the problems that often pop up during Mercury Retrograde can sometimes feel debilitating.


If you want to understand how to work with the energy of Mercury Retrograde to make it a more harmonious time for you, instead of having its energy work against you, then this blog post is for you. If you often experience Mercury Retrograde as a time of chaos instead of calm, this blog post is for you as well.


In the following paragraphs, I will describe three specific and very powerful things you can do to keep your success going with your manifestation efforts during a Mercury Retrograde phase:

First, a great antidote to the Mercury Retrograde chaos is to set intentions for what you want to feel and experience during Mercury Retrograde and then broadcast those intentions daily so you can consciously create more positive experiences. When you want to manifest a different reality from the one you usually experience during Mercury Retrograde, you must be really mindful of the intentions and energy you’re broadcasting and make sure you’re only broadcasting energy that you desire to call back to you.


Second, make your natural energetic boundary (or aura) stronger so you can shield yourself from any chaotic energies around you. Even if you are not experiencing turbulent emotional times during Mercury Retrograde, it is extremely easy to absorb the chaotic experiences that others are going through during Mercury Retrograde. To counteract this, the best thing you can do is make your own natural energetic boundary stronger.


Third, work with the energy of Mercury Retrograde instead of against it by looking for any possibilities that it offers. Mercury Retrograde occurs three times a year, every year, so it is a phenomenon that we’re meant to keep experiencing, and there actually can be an important purpose to it. The energy of Mercury Retrograde favors activities that involve: reassessing, redoing, revising, revisiting, and revamping (to ultimately make things better). It is a perfect time to deal with anything unresolved from your past. It is a time to slow down and pay attention to details and to carefully choose your words when communicating (which can help us to become more conscious of the reality we’re creating and how we’re all connected). If you can find a way to honor the energy that Mercury Retrograde offers, it may be possible have a more positive experience with it.

1. Set intentions for what you want to feel and experience when manifesting during Mercury Retrograde.

  • To do so, first get a pencil/pen and paper (don’t type this; the physical act of writing creates a stronger connection between your conscious mind, subconscious, and that which you desire).
  • Think about the FEELINGS you most want to experience during Mercury Retrograde. Write those down as intention statements in the present tense (such as “I am joyful”, “No matter what happens, I am calm.”, etc.). If you usually find that you feel frustrated, etc. during Mercury Retrograde, think of the emotion you’d like to experience INSTEAD and write that down.
  • Now think about the experiences you want to have during Mercury Retrograde. These experiences can be experiences you desire to have in any area of life. Be as specific as possible and allow for typical Mercury Retrograde snafus and problems in your intentions. Write your intentions in positive language (i.e., instead of writing “I have no problems with technology” you could write something like “Whenever I use the computer or phone, everything works perfectly.” Or, my favorite, “Technology loves and supports me.”).
  • To broadcast your intentions: Everyday during Mercury Retrograde, turn your full body attention to what you have written as your intentions. To do this, you could copy them down everyday in writing. You could speak them out loud. You could read them to yourself. You could visualize them as you write, read, or speak them. Then FEEL them in your body as you do. You could visualize different scenarios taking place where you experience your intentions. Spending one to two minutes per day feeling and visualizing your intentions during Mercury Retrograde may go on a long way.

2. Make your natural energetic boundary (aka your aura) stronger so you can shield yourself from any chaotic energies around you when manifesting during Mercury Retrograde.

Technique #1: Become more aware of your auric field and get in the habit of working with it to create a natural energetic shield. Imagine your aura as an egg-shaped shell around your entire body, that extends three feet above your head, three feet below your feet, and three feet in all directions. Feel it and sense it. Feel how resilient it is but also how tough it is. No chaotic or harmful energy can get in and none of your positive energy can leak out. You can choose to infuse it with a color of your choosing that you charge with protective energy by an intention of your choice. It can be helpful to spend a few seconds in the morning before you begin your day bringing your awareness to this natural energetic shield and charging it with the intention that you are protected from any unhelpful energies throughout your day.


Technique #2 (my personal favorite): Imagine that there is a tube of light that is a few inches thick running straight up and down from your crown chakra (at the top of your head) to your root chakra (base of your spine) that then continues down into the Earth. Visualize white light energy flowing up from the Earth through this tube and then down again. In your mind’s eye, pulse its energy up and down the tube so that it feels full and active. You can do this throughout the day to maintain a sense of your own strong natural energetic boundary.

3. Think of possibilities (instead of impossibilities) in each and every moment so you can work with the energy when manifesting during Mercury Retrograde.

Simple mindset shifts can often help people survive Mercury Retrograde. When things go wrong during Mercury Retrograde, it may be helpful to try to see what occurs as a teachable moment instead of as a traumatic event. Obviously, this is not always easy or possible, especially when, say, the twenty page document you just wrote disappears and you need to rewrite the entire thing; however, if you are able to look at everything with curiosity, where you stay open to new opportunities that may arise out of the chaos, this may make it so life doesn’t feel as heavy or overwhelming during a Mercury retrograde phase.


The energy of Mercury Retrograde favors actions starting with the prefix re-: redoing, reviewing, reflecting, revising, revamping, repairing, rethinking, refraining, returning, revisiting, reorganizing, reconnecting, resolving, etc. So, if you can look for opportunities to put your focus on things involving these themes, it might make Mercury Retrograde feel less frustrating and more productive.

There really is no need for you to worry about whether it’s safe to focus on manifesting during Mercury Retrograde. No matter what is going on around you, follow the three tips in this blog post so you can proactively protect yourself during Mercury Retrograde and sail through its phase with calm and peace.
